I have thick mucus in my throat all the time that makes it hard to breathe and I have to spit it out very often. What should I take?

Hello, for about 6 months I have had thick transparent or white secretions in my throat (between my nose and throat), all day long. This makes it difficult for me to breathe well (especially at night) and I constantly need to try to expel the secretions. I have sleep apnea and it makes my condition much worse. The allergy meds don't work at all...

Hello ma'am,
You mention that allergy medications are not effective, which ones did you try and for how long?
Have you tried other products?

I have tried over the counter pills, extra strength etc. For several weeks every day. Otherwise, over the counter nasal sprays also for 1 week. And the "nose rinses" from time to time but it's always to be repeated

Thanks for the information, I'm sorry for the delay in my response, I hadn't seen the notification!
You did well with the nasal hygiene, I recommend it as often as needed during the day and at least 30 minutes before bed.
Given your testing, I would be inclined to suggest an anti-histamine like Aerius, Claritin or something else. These are well-tolerated options and can be assessed for effectiveness after 5-7 days.
If these measures are insufficient, I suggest consulting your pharmacist who will evaluate the possibility of prescribing a corticosteroid-based nasal spray to help reduce sinus inflammation. This can be used in conjunction with the above measures.
I hope I have been helpful, I will remain available if you have any further questions.
Sincerely,
Tom Samaha, pharmacist
