My 90 year old father wants to stop taking dutasteride (Avodart) which he has been taking for years saying he doesn't need it anymore at his age. What do you think?

Hello,
Dutasteride can reduce the size of the prostate significantly. Stopping this medication could cause the prostate to become larger than "normal" again. In such cases, your father may have difficulty urinating if he had difficulty urinating before this medication was started.
This said, if he really wants to stop it, he can really do so by talking with his pharmacist and doctor. That way, proper follow-up can be done.
Be aware that this medication does not have to be stopped gradually and that very few people suffer from short-term side effects related to stopping this medication.
