My newborn is vomiting?

31-year-old woman2 years ago
My 2 ½ week old baby has been vomiting heavily for the past 3-4 days, about 1-2 times a day. It's not always directly after feeding. She is breastfeeding, the vomit is curdled. She often cramps 10-15 minutes before it happens and at the time she never cries. I already don't consume dairy products since her brother is allergic. She also has a lot of reflux that comes up and she gulps. I know that vomiting can be normal for some babies, but my first one never had it so I'm worried.

Thank you for your question!
Several things can be tried to reduce regurgitation
  • if possible, decrease the amount of feeding, even if it means giving more often
  • Take a break during feedings to let the burp pass: hold the baby upright and rub his back from bottom to top (you must avoid tapping)
  • Avoid changing your baby's position after feeding, and putting her to bed immediately afterwards.
Spitting up does not necessarily indicate a problem. Basically your baby has to learn to digest and this can come with difficulties.
I hope this has been helpful and if you have any further questions, please don't hesitate to ask!
