Does Sertraline affect appetite?

44-year-old woman2 years ago
I have been taking sertraline for 3 years (75mg currently vs 200mg a few months ago). I had asked to stop it before my bariatric surgery due to reflux from taking it but it didn't work anxiety wise so we put it back on. I am still on edge. More impulsive than before... I'm at 75mg and I'm afraid I'm going to have to increase it again because of the weight gain from the antidepressants. I'd like to better understand what's causing the weight gain from the AD because given my weight loss journey, it seems pretty counterproductive!

Good morning, ma'am,
As far as weight gain is concerned, yes, you have some control over this side effect; you have to keep in mind that it is mainly the result of an increase in appetite. Therefore, keeping a balanced diet and exercising at a moderate intensity for 150 minutes a week is a very good way to counteract this and to help with depressive symptoms.
I hope this has been helpful to you, and please don't hesitate to contact me if you have any further questions!
