Can I still get pregnant (safety for the baby) during the 3 months of the cortisone effect?

29-year-old woman2 years ago
I had an injection of intra muscular cortisone last week to reduce the inflammation due to rheumatoid arthritis. The rheumatologist told me that the effect is good for 3 months.

Hello,
you mentioned an intramuscular injection, but I guess you meant intra-articular injection, i.e. an injection into a joint?
There are no or almost no studies that have evaluated the safety of intra-articular cortisone injections during pregnancy or just before pregnancy. However, some studies suggest that there may be an increased risk of deformities in the baby, especially if the injection is given near the beginning of the pregnancy. Nevertheless, the risk may vary depending on the type of cortisone used by the doctor. Depending on the type of cortisone used, the risk may be low, but if you prefer not to take any risks, I recommend waiting to plan a pregnancy, if that is possible for you.
It is also recommended to start a prenatal vitamin supplement 3 months before conception. So, if you haven't already done so, you could start these vitamins during this 3 month period, while the effect of the cortisone wears off. If you are interested, at Familiprix in Wickham, we offer a consultation to prescribe the right kind of vitamins for you.
