Can the drug MERFORMINE create a dry mouth (feeling of having an irritated tongue and a pasty mouth)?

31-year-old woman3 years ago
I started a medication with metformin (in a fertility process) where I am gradually increasing my dose to 850g 2x a day. I also take RUPALL daily for allergies.

Hello Ma'am
According to my research, this side effect is reported in the product monograph. However, it is not a common effect of the drug and the mechanisms are unknown.
  • How long have you been on metformin?
  • How long have you been suffering from dry mouth?
In fact, if it's been less than a week, I would suggest waiting a few more days to see if the effect will wear off by itself. In the meantime, you can try:
  • Drink small sips of water or sugar-free drinks often (despite water being different from saliva, it can help preserve mucosal moisture). The effectiveness of this measure depends mainly on the frequency of rinsing, not the total amount used.
  • Slowly melting ice helps to soothe discomfort, while moisturizing.
  • Avoid dehydrating beverages, such as those containing caffeine (coffee, tea, some soft drinks) or alcohol (also dry out the mucous membranes).
  • Proscribe mouthwashes containing alcohol (Cepacol®, several Listerine®,...)
Do not hesitate to contact me with any additional questions.
Happy day,
