Is atorvastatin safe?

54-year-old woman2 years ago
Hello! I am 52 years old. I have been taking Atorvastatin 10 mg for the past two days despite a healthy lifestyle. I am afraid of the side effects, including muscle cramps, and the damage to my health that this drug can cause because statins are controversial. Am I right to be concerned?

I am perfectly healthy except for this high cholesterol level and I have a healthy weight.

Good morning, ma'am,
Unfortunately genetic factors can still affect cholesterol levels
We often aim for the lowest possible dose, and blood tests to check your cholesterol level and other markers such as blood sugar, liver health, etc
Yes, muscle cramps are possible but very rare
I hope I've put your mind at ease, don't hesitate if you have any other questions!

Thank you! If my levels come back normal in three months, can I stop it or is it permanent?

Thanks for the feedback!
If so, you should ask yourself the following question: has your bad cholesterol level returned to a more acceptable level because of the medication? If so, isn't there a risk that it could go back up after you stop?
There is nothing permanent about it. If your cholesterol level is at an acceptable level (not too low) and you tolerate the medication well, it would be suggested to continue it. If it is ever decided to stop or suspend it, you will simply have to monitor your health closely.
