What is the difference between a patented drug and a generic for my cancer medication?

I have just undergone surgery and radiation treatments for breast cancer. The oncologist prescribed Letrozol. I was given a generic. Is it as effective?

Hello Madam,
You don't have to worry about letrozole. Almost all patients in Quebec take this generic. In addition, bioequivalence tests have been conducted to show that it provides the same amount of active ingredient as the original version of the drug.
It is my pleasure,
Alexandre Chagnon, pharmacist
