Hello, I have been suffering from recurrent severe depression and generalized anxiety with panic attacks and difficulty sleeping for over 7 years. Recently, I was also diagnosed with a borderline disorder. I was prescribed Remeron but was really freaked out by the idea that this medication could make me gain a lot of weight. I have tried a few other medications before, mainly Seroquel (lots of side effects) and Cipralex (didn't seem to work at all). Could there be an alternative considering the fact that I tend to get very bad side effects very easily? Thank you for your help!

Mirtazapine causes weight gain in about 1 in 10 people, and the weight gain is rarely more than 7% of your current weight. This means that in this case, since the doctor has judged from your file that this is the medication to try, I would try it.

Especially since you are aware that weight gain can occur (but only in 10% of patients), you can start taking steps now to reduce its occurrence (balanced diet, physical activity, etc.).

Mirtazapine (Remeron) will help both your depressive symptoms and your anxiety. In my opinion, you should not put this option aside on the (small) risk of weight gain alone.
