Is there an interaction between Ferrous Sulfate 300mg and Dexilant 60mg?

29-year-old woman5 years ago
My doctor has prescribed me iron tablets (sulfate 300mg), for a period of 3 months to fight against anemia. However, I have an acid problem. So I take a Dexilant tablet (60mg) every morning before eating. However, it is written in the advice sheet not to mix the two. Is there a solution or should I change my iron supplement? Thank you.

Daily medications: - Dexilant 60mg - Cyclen

Hello, excellent question! Rest assured, Dexilant and ferrous sulfate do not interact. The antacids that could be problematic are Tums, Gaviscon, Rolaid, etc. When taken at the same time as iron, they could reduce its absorption in your system and therefore its effectiveness. Note that calcium, magnesium, zinc and other mineral supplements may also interact with your iron supplement. Also, long-term use of Dexilant may affect your body's ability to absorb iron from the diet and may be part of the reason for the anemia your doctor is currently treating. How long have you been taking Dexilant? Have you ever tried taking it less frequently, for example every other day, to see if the stomach acid symptoms are still manageable? This possible modification to your treatment could be discussed with your doctor or pharmacist. We hope to have answered your question. Have a nice day! Laurie Hudon-Germain, pharmacist

Yes, I have been taking Dexilant for 3-4 years, which could explain, as you say, my body's inability to absorb iron. I tried to reduce from 60 to 30 mg. And the pain and inability to ingest food was coming back.... Are there any other solutions? Thank you so much!

Have you been tested to find out the cause of your heartburn? If so, and no cause could be identified, the solution is in some cases to continue the antacid such as Dexilant in the long term. However, it is recommended that you try to wean yourself off occasionally to see if the symptoms are still present. Rather than going from 60mg to 30mg, taking it every other day could be considered. In the meantime, it is important to treat the anemia identified by your doctor with the ferrous sulfate that she prescribed. Have I answered all your questions? We look forward to hearing from you!
