Can a doctor prescribe probiotics? Is there a cream or product that can help my fistula close?

I suffer from irritable bowel syndrome and I believe that a period of intense diarrhea has resulted in me having an anal fistula.

Hello Mrs,
It is not necessary to obtain a prescription for probiotics, they are available over the counter. It has not been established whether this type of product can help you in this type of situation. You can try one, but don't expect miracles. Also keep in mind that some people will have diarrhea when taking probiotics.
For possible hemorrhoid problems, Anusol Plus ointment, available without a prescription, can be applied to the irritated area (inside and outside if needed) twice a day and after each bowel movement.
Avoid sitting on the toilet bowl for long periods of time, as this can make the situation worse. Get up as soon as you are done (don't read the newspaper or use your cell phone for example).
I would also recommend using unscented wet wipes, a wet washcloth or a bidet for hygiene instead of toilet paper at this time to give the mucous membranes a chance to heal.
If the situation does not seem to be improving after 2 weeks, or if it gets worse, you should consult a doctor.
I will remain available if you have any further questions!
Sincerely,
Tom Samaha, pharmacist

Hello,
It's not hemorrhoids, but an anal fistula. Plus, I already have a bidet.
Also, I know that probiotics are available over the counter, but since they are very expensive in the long term, I would like to know if it is possible to have them under prescription to save costs.
Thanks

Thanks for the feedback!
If you have group insurance, you'll have to check with your insurance company to see if this type of product is covered when prescribed, and with your pharmacist to see if, at the very least, the taxes will be saved with a prescription. It's really a case by case basis.
Finally, if it's a fistula, there is no over-the-counter product that can take care of that problem.
