I went to the doctor yesterday and I have tonsillitis. I was prescribed an antibiotic which I have been taking since yesterday morning. I was wondering how long it would last.

Hello!
Your symptoms should improve within 48-72 hours of starting the antibiotic (so by Monday morning)
Until then, if there are no allergies or contraindications, you can take Tylenol 500mg - 2 co. Every 6 hours or Advil 200mg - 2 co. every 8 hours. The use of a salt water gargle (1/2 tsp of salt in 1/2 cup of warm water) for 60sec 4 times a day is also recommended
Don't forget to change your toothbrush and to avoid sharing your toothpaste tube, glasses and utensils with other people

I actually started taking medication on Thursday morning. I did a throat culture but I don't think it's strep since I haven't had a booster. If it's viral, then I guess the antibiotics don't do anything?

Indeed, in case of a viral infection, antibiotics are of no use
I suggest that you continue with them and on Monday contact your medical clinic to validate the test results and to see the doctor again if the symptoms have not improved
