I have a stomach ache. Difficulty to have a bowel movement. 1 day late in my period. Can constipation delay my period?

Is it normal for me to have very loose stools after being constipated? I take medications such as vivance, citalopram and minovral.

Hello,
Without saying it's impossible, there doesn't seem to be a direct link between constipation and late periods. Rather, we are dealing with two quite distinct events.
Concerning constipation, the stools are generally harder than soft, because constipation is characterized by a slowing down of the intestinal transit, so food accumulates and the stools harden as a result. If your stools are soft, you seem to be in a stage of pre-diarrhea or an alternation between the two. How long has this been happening?
Be aware that medications can cause constipation, including citalopram and Vyvanse... How long have you been taking them? If they are new, there are other medications I can suggest to help you.
In the meantime, the following measures should be taken:
  • Drink lots of water
  • Eat a diet rich in fibre
  • Move around a bit to help your bowels move
There are several possible causes for a delay in your period. Did you forget to take your Minovral pill or were you late in taking it lately? If you had sex without additional protection (e.g. condom), a pregnancy test might be necessary as well...
I hope this sheds some light on the subject. If you have any other questions or need further clarification, please let me know and I will be happy to answer.
Sincerely,
David Tan, pharmacist
