Hello,
Flomax™ is not known to cause blood pressure increases. An increase in blood pressure can be due to many reasons such as taking over-the-counter medications (Ex: Advil™, decongestants, etc), taking certain natural health products, forgetting to take anti-hypertensive medication, smoking or even stress. Kidney stones can also be a cause of high blood pressure, so I recommend that you consult your doctor.
In the meantime, I recommend that you take several measurements and record them in a notebook. To get a better idea of blood pressure and allow the pharmacist or doctor to be able to better intervene you can take four measurements a day for a week:
- Two times in the morning, before breakfast and taking your medication.
- Two times in the evening, before bathing and taking your medications.
To ensure that the values are as accurate as possible, please take the following precautions before taking blood pressure:
- Wait 2 hours after a meal;
- Avoid stimulant medications (e.g., decongestants, antidepressants, and other drugs). e.g., decongestants);
- Avoid smoking, caffeine, or exercise 60 minutes prior to blood pressure measurement;
- Go to the bathroom as needed;
- Don't wear tight clothes;
- Stay quiet for at least 5 minutes before starting.
I would also like to take this opportunity to remind you of some non-pharmacological measures to improve blood pressure control:
- Promote a diverse diet: emphasize fruits/vegetables, grains, milk, fish, poultry. Limit salt, alcohol, refined sugar and restaurants (Consult a nutritionist if needed)
- Eat less salt: limit to 2300 mg per day, avoid a food if it contains more than 10% of the daily dose (read food labels)
- Maintain a healthy weight
- Limit alcohol consumption: Do not exceed 2 drinks per day for men
- Quit smoking
- Practice regular physical activity
