My partner and I are trying to have a child. We have been told by some people that it is better to wait 48 hours between intercourse to allow the sperm produced to mature. Is this true?

No. The fertile window, that is, the time when sexual intercourse can lead to conception, is relatively short, about 3 to 4 days. This is because the sperm is viable for about this time in the woman's body. It has to meet the egg, which will only be viable for a maximum of 24 hours following ovulation. Therefore, there is a 3 to 4 day maximum of fertility around ovulation. Sexual relations should therefore take place at least every 2 days during this period, ideally every day. The sperm does not have to "mature" in the woman's body.
