My daughter was prescribed Sterisporin (zinc bacitracin ophthalmic ointment) by a pharmacist for conjunctivitis (4x a day for 7 days). Case of conjunctivitis at the PBS. She had yellow secretions all day.

Hello,
Sterisporin contains an antibiotic, so it is only effective against bacterial conjunctivitis. If your child has redness in the eye and purulent yellow discharge, it is possible that your daughter has bacterial conjunctivitis. However, you should know that conjunctivitis, whether viral or bacterial, is a minor eye infection and is self-limiting whether or not it is treated. This infection lasts about 3 to 5 days. What is unfortunate in PBS is that it often requires treatment with an antibiotic to possibly decrease the risk of transmission. However, treatment is completely optional.
