Are the medications prescribed to delay memory loss for people with dementia really effective and are they often accompanied by side effects (diarrhea, etc.)?

My aunt has had dementia for 5 years and was diagnosed about 4 years ago. Her doctor has just suggested that she be prescribed a drug to delay memory loss. She took a cognitive test and scored 9 out of 30. In just a few minutes, she can't remember what she was told or what she might have done or what might have happened to her (for example, if she fell and hurt herself). She lives in a residence for independent seniors and is able to dress herself, make herself breakfast, go to the dining room and participate in some activities.

These drugs provide some benefit by delaying the progression of the disease. However, this effect is not noticeable in all patients. A considerable proportion of patients experience almost no positive effects from taking these drugs. This is what prompted France to question its reimbursement a few weeks ago (https://www.la-croix.com/Sciences-et-ethique/Sante/Les-medicaments-anti-Alzheimer-vont-continuer-etre-rembourses-2017-04-11-1200838858). In Quebec, it is still prescribed and geriatric colleagues have treated patients who have been able to maintain their autonomy longer thanks to these drugs.

Of course, these drugs are not without side effects. Diarrhea is one of the side effects encountered in some patients (about 7%), but also nausea, stomach ache, headaches, slowing of the heartbeat and loss of appetite, among others.

I think it would be best to consider my answer and discuss it with your aunt's doctor to determine together if it is justified to start this medication.
