I have been taking concerta since last March but it was only in the last 4 months that I noticed that every time I took my medication, I had a violent cough that started and lasted a long time, something that had never happened to me before. The first time was in October, it was a violent cough that resembled what I was diagnosed with today and that lasted two months. Then, during the Christmas vacations, I was still coughing from the medication I took at the end of the session and it was the same kind of cough. It finally stopped and everything was fine, I was not taking any medication, I was in good shape and my first week of school, I took concerta again and this violent cough started again after consuming at least 3 pills in total and now I have been diagnosed with bronchitis which is even stronger than the ones I had for the last 4 months and I have to take pumps. I am not a smoker and I have never had bronchitis in the past, I have never had a long and violent cough so I feel like every time I take concerta 18mg it causes me to cough since I have never experienced this in the past and I have been on this medication for 10 months. What do you think and what do you think is the cause? Thank you

Hello

Your situation may indeed be caused by methylphenidate (Concerta). According to the references consulted, this drug is responsible for causing cough and upper respiratory tract infections in about 2% of patients.

By reading the chronology of your symptoms, it seems possible that you are part of this 2%. It is therefore important to talk to your pharmacist, who will first report the side effect to Health Canada and the pharmaceutical company, and then recommend to your doctor another medication for your situation.
