Progesterone is mainly used to help during the first trimester by promoting the thickening of the endometrium to accommodate the egg (the fertilized egg). Its benefits are not proven after 12 weeks
The majority of miscarriages occur in the first trimester, and after this period it is much rarer
This is why doctors often recommend not to continue it after 12 weeks.
That being said, as a pure precaution, if you have bleeding after 12 weeks, it would be best to consult a doctor.
