I take Xarelto 20mg once a day. For this, my doctor prescribed pantoprazole 40mg (to protect my stomach). Can I replace it with another medication? Thank you

In order to answer your question, I would need to know if you are taking any other medications. Also, have you ever had a stomach ulcer or digestive bleeding (from the stomach or intestine)? It is important to understand that simply taking Xarelto in a 70 year old woman with no history of GI bleeding or concomitant use of another drug that increases the risk of bleeding does not necessarily mean that she should take a drug in the pantoprazole family.

Get back to me with the information and I can see with you if another medication might be appropriate (or no medication at all!).

In this case, I think you could indeed take another medication, or none at all. You can discuss this with your pharmacist or doctor, making sure to mention that taking PPIs is linked to fractures, decreased absorption of vitamin B12 (linked to macrocytic anemia), decreased absorption of magnesium and heme iron. You may not take any medication at all and instead remain vigilant for symptoms of bleeding in the digestive tract (black stools, blood in the stool, etc.).

What do you think?

I will definitely bring it up. Especially since I don't like to take medications especially because of the side effects they can cause..Thanks so much again for the clarification and have a great day.
