Is it dangerous to smoke and take the pill for only 1 month at my age (49)?

I take Marvelon for 1 month to avoid menstruation during my vacations. I am an ex-smoker who started smoking again about 2 months ago (15 cigarettes a day). Is it dangerous to smoke and take the pill for only 1 month at my age?

Good morning, ma'am,
That is a very good question. In fact, it is impossible to qualify precisely the risk generated by taking the pill for a short period of time, considering your age and your smoking habits. One thing is certain, there is a risk.

To reduce this risk, several things can be done. First, you could switch from the pill to another method of contraception that allows you to avoid menstruation while using a smaller amount of hormones (patch, ring). You could also reduce the risk of suffering from blood clots by avoiding being immobilized for a long period of time (sitting, lying down).

But the wisest thing to do would probably be not to take a pill at all, especially since smoking somewhat reduces the chances that lower amounts of hormones will be able to completely eliminate menstruation.
