I give my 3 year old son Lax-a-day because he is constipated. His last bowel movement was almost 2 weeks ago. Will I see results quickly? Should I combine Lansoyl with Lax-a-day?

He usually has one bowel movement a week with great difficulty. His pediatrician has prescribed the laxative to regularize him, but it doesn't seem to work.

It usually takes up to 3 days to see the full effect of Lax-A-Day in a person who has temporary constipation. In a child like your son, who seems to have difficulty with constipation on a chronic basis, it is more difficult to know how long it will take before the medication helps him improve his bowel regularity. What is certain is that it may be necessary to take the medication for a few weeks before concluding that the medication is not effective. Lax-A-Day is now the drug of choice for constipation in children and is used regularly in hospitals with good results. So give the medication time.

Before combining another laxative with Lax-A-Day, you should talk to your son's pediatrician. It's not wise to change the treatment on our own, especially if we don't know the cause of the constipation. You are fortunate to have a pediatrician to follow up with, so take advantage of that.

I recommend that you contact your pediatrician and tell him that your child has not had a bowel movement for almost 2 weeks now. When you meet with your pediatrician, ask if it would be possible to combine two laxatives. Based on his assessment, he will be able to recommend the laxative that best suits your son's situation, and it doesn't have to be Lansoyl.

Of course, it is Friday night and it is very likely that you will not be able to reach the pediatrician until Monday. Please seek urgent advice before Monday if you encounter any of these situations: If you think your child is much more constipated than usual OR He or she suddenly starts having small amounts of diarrhea OR He or she starts to run a fever OR Complains of a severe stomachache or painful cramps OR They force themselves to have a bowel movement and nothing wants to come out and it causes pain OR He or she starts to feel sick or vomit
