How long does it take for metformin to start working on blood sugar?

30-year-old woman3 years ago
I have a question for a friend who has just started a medication for diabetes (Metformin). I would like to know if the effects of this medication are "instantaneous" or if it takes a few weeks to see the positive effects (e.g.: less fatigue, less irritability, etc.). I would like to know if the effects of this medication are "instantaneous" or if it takes a few weeks to see the positive effects?

Hello, thank you for your question!
It is rare that metformin causes fatigue and irritability. It often causes undesirable effects on the digestive system
On the other hand, its desired effects appear quite quickly, 1 to 2 weeks with an effective dose.
I hope I have been helpful to you, please do not hesitate to contact me if you have any further questions

By positive effects, I meant calming the symptoms of hyperglycemia (fatigue, irritability, etc.).
thank you

Thank you for the precision! It should take 1 to 2 weeks maximum, at an effective dose. Measuring blood sugar at different times of the day at the beginning of treatment to assess effectiveness.
I hope I've been helpful, please feel free to ask any other questions you may have!
