Sore throat and nighttime coughing

50-year-old woman5 years ago
I’ve had a sore throat for 3 weeks with no improvements. I cough mostly in the evening and during the night sleep. What should I take or do? I consulted a doctor 3 weeks ago. He gave me Alvesco but no improvement. I have no allergies. I have also been taking Tylenol Cold day & night but still no improvement.

Hello, thank you for your question.
Do you mind if If I ask you a few questions to better inform you on your options? Do you take any other medications, do you have allergies to any medication, are you pregnant or breastfeeding?
Lastly, apart from the symptoms already mentioned, do you have any others, like fever or nasal congestion or runny nose?

I don’t take any other medication besides the Alvesco pump (once a day) and Tylenol cold day& night. I have no allergies to medication. I am not pregnant nor breastfeeding. I don’t have other symptoms besides being tired because coughing at night keeps me awake.

Thank you for the information!
If the Tylenol Cold medication is not working then i suggest stopping it. I suspect that your sinuses are leaking into your throat, which might contribute to your sore throat and your nighttime coughing.
I strongly suggest clearing out your sinuses with a saline solution (Hydrasense® or Sinus Rince®) at least twice daily, but an hour before bedtime. You can also apply Vicks vaporub on your chest which works very well for night time. If you want, you can also try an anti-histamine medication like Benadryl® which can be taken short term for your cough. I recommend talking to your pharmacist for personalized dosage.
