I am a man who frequently has yeast infections in his genitals. I am being treated for psoriatic arthritis and am taking the following medications - methotrexate 25mg injectable weekly; - Cimzia 200mg injectable every 2 weeks; - folic acid 5mg daily; - Leucovarin 5mg weekly; - Bisoprolol 5mg daily; - Telmisartan 5mg daily. To treat yeast infections I use canestan cream but I notice a decrease in effectiveness. Is it possible that this is a side effect of my medication and are there other treatments for this type of recurring infection? Thank you for your help!

Hello Sir, The Cimzia you are taking may be reducing your immune system's response to fungal (yeast) infections somewhat, which could be part of what is causing you to suffer from recurring infection.
The best trick to reducing the incidence of this type of infection is of course hygiene. Among other things, if you are not circumcised, it is important to wash the glans well after every sexual encounter and allow the skin to dry properly. If you find that Canesten works a little less well, you can try alternating with Monistat, which is also available in pharmacies without a prescription. Be careful, however, if the skin on which you apply the cream is irritated, as Monistat tends to heat up a little more on application than Canesten. If the infections are no longer treatable with these two creams, you will have to go see a doctor to obtain a more powerful antifungal agent. Good day, Alexandre Chagnon, pharmacist
