Hello,
A hydrocortisone cream (or CORTATE) would be preferable to reduce the itching, redness and irritation caused by poison ivy. Depending on the intensity of the itch, there are 0.5% and 1.0% hydrocortisone creams available on the shelves in pharmacies. Apply it twice a day, morning and evening.
For very fast relief, you can also use BENADRYL anti-allergy caplets (pink) at a rate of 1 caplet 3-4 times a day every 4-6 hours until complete healing. Hydrocortisone can sometimes take a few days to 1-2 weeks, while Benadryl can provide a full effect after 48-72 hours. Both products can be used together if desired
Finally, cold water compresses, applied 4-6 times a day for 10-15 minutes each time, will help reduce symptoms and clean the area properly to prevent bacterial superinfection.
I hope this information is helpful to you. If there is anything else, please do not hesitate to contact me again and I will be happy to answer you.
Sincerely,
David Tan, pharmacist
