My 3 year old son has a big cough full of secretions and his breathing seems difficult. Also, he has had a fever on and off since Tuesday.

Our pharmacist just advised us to give syrup and to do the nose washing more often. I'm not too worried because he's playful and in a good mood anyway, but I don't like it very much and I'm not getting any appointments with any doctors today. Do you know of any other tips to help him more? Thank you for your help!

Hello Ma'am,
Do you also use Tempra™ or Advil to relieve his fever or when he is more moody?
In my opinion, a simple nose wash is often insufficient. Instead, use a technique recommended at Ste-Justine Hospital and described in the following document (pages 6 and 7). You'll see how much more effective this will be and it will help improve his condition by a lot (often in a few hours).

Hello, thank you for your reply!
We give him tylenol when the fever rises above 39 but otherwise we let it do its combative effect when it is mild. Today, Saturday, he has no fever, his nose has started running again and when he coughs you can hear his secretions coming off. I think it's taking the right edge, although he's still very congested all over.
Do you think it's a real flu, considering he still had a 4 day fever?

Thanks for those details!"
Hard to say. At three years old, many children react "hard" to a simple cold. The important thing here is that everything takes on the right side. :)
Happy recovery to your boy and a good Sunday to you,
