My sister has a 5 month old daughter. She would like to know if there is an alternative to Orajel, recommended by pharmacists? Because of the swallowing reflex, she is afraid that Orajel will be harmful to her child when she swallows a little.

Hello,

Orajel is a good alternative to the medication used for pain relief (Tylenol, Advil, etc.). However, it is only an alternative. We should try these drugs first, and add Orajel when they are not enough.

I therefore recommend that you start by taking Tylenol for the toothache (or Advil/ibuprofen which lasts a little longer), and don't hesitate to serve him cold food even if it's the middle of winter!

If, and only if, these measures are not sufficient, then you can consider the Orajel.

Thank you very much for your answer!

Also note that Orajel works best if you do not drink or eat within minutes of taking it. This will also reduce the risk of the child swallowing some of the medication that has not yet been absorbed.

It's a pleasure!

Okay, noted. Thanks again.

I'll tell my sister.

No problem! You can recommend that your sister come and ask those questions here directly if she has more questions about her daughter.

Yes, good idea!
