Alopecia (hair loss) seems to be related to genetics, but the influence of genetics is not clear. The chromosome that is often involved (X) is passed from mother to son, but there are also studies that show similarities in hair loss between father and son. In your case, it is therefore difficult to know what will have the most impact if your father suffers from baldness and your mother has thick hair.
In any case, to ensure good hair health, certain non-pharmacological measures can be used. Among other things, have damaged ends cut by a hairdresser on a regular basis, use a shampoo and conditioner according to your hair type, avoid dyes and bleaches, and use the hair dryer (or set it to low intensity) and irons as little as possible.
As for pharmacological treatments, there is a topical treatment available over the counter called Rogaine (minoxidil in foam or solution). It promotes hair growth by stimulating the hair follicles. However, this product can take a long time to take effect (4 months for a beginning of action, 12 months maximum effect), the hair that grows back can be thinner and fragile at the beginning and you lose its effects 3 to 4 months after stopping (so if it works, to continue "for life"). There are also pill treatments that are obtained under doctor's prescription. These also take a certain amount of time to take effect (about 3-6 months for the first effect and 12 months for a noticeable effect) and above all, they have several undesirable effects (decreased libido, erectile dysfunction...).
There may be other solutions to your problem. I invite you to consult your pharmacist or your doctor if you want more information about the products discussed and you will be able to make an informed choice according to what suits you.
Have a nice day!
