Started Dec 2009-stopped Sept 2012-resumed Oct 2014-stopped Nov 2017-June 2010 Actonel replaced with Risedronate 35 mg- My question comes from the fact that my retired gynecologist suggested stopping after 5 years and my GP says it's for life.

Hello, ma'am.
Some studies have shown that the effects of risedronate can persist even after discontinuation, given its long half-life (which means the time it takes for the body to metabolize and/or eliminate half of the drug, so to speak)
For this reason, some references suggest the possibility of discontinuing the drug after 5 years. There is no consensus on the length of this 'vacation', although in my practice I often see it suspended for 1 year before resuming.
That being said, it would not be indicated in people at high risk of fracture, or in those with low bone density or taking medications that affect bone density.
This would explain your family doctor's response. I hope that I have answered your question, and please do not hesitate to contact me if you have any other questions
