My 18 month old has started to keep his food in his mouth.

Hello, My 18 month old is starting to put food in his mouth. This morning he put play dough in his mouth. We managed to get it out. However, since then he keeps all food in his mouth. It can be 20-30 minutes until I or daddy go to force feed him. We don't know why he does this all of a sudden. We have never had a problem with food. He has no known health problems either. If you have an explanation, it would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance,

Hello,
As long as he is in perfect health, there is nothing to worry about. However, keeping food in his mouth can be related to several factors and it is difficult to identify one of them. Sometimes it can be dangerous because if he keeps the food in his mouth for a long time and then lies down, there can be a risk of suffocation. So you have to be sure that his mouth is empty before going to bed or when he finishes eating. We can compensate for this by teaching him to learn the hygiene of chewing insofar as we will not add food to him until he has emptied his mouth and in this way he will be hungry so he will be forced to empty his mouth

Hello,
Yes, yesterday for his diaper change he had a heart attack because he had food, so I did his diaper change standing on the floor. We are going to be really more vigilant. We will definitely insist that he eats both his meals and snacks at the table only. This will probably make chewing easier. We will also give him portions one after the other
Thank you for your answer

Welcome,
Yes, one portion at a time and if he doesn't empty his mouth, we don't give him more until he gets used to it
