Hello!
If you can't tolerate your multivitamin, we usually recommend switching to folic acid alone until the nausea stabilizes, usually after the first trimester of pregnancy. However, there is the multivitamin Pregvit, which can be found behind the pharmacy counter, which may cause less nausea if taken twice a day (which divides the minerals throughout the day, rather than having them all at once.
I suggest that you contact your regular pharmacist who can prescribe either one based on their questionnaire.
The dose of Diclectin can also be adjusted if it does not relieve your symptoms and is well tolerated. Once again, I advise you to contact your pharmacist or your doctor on this subject.
Finally, here are some tips to help control nausea during pregnancy:
  • Avoid going too long without eating. Try to eat more often, but in smaller quantities.
  • Eat lightly (e.g. toast or crackers) and wait 15 minutes before getting out of bed slowly in the morning.
  • Eat foods that you crave. For example, salty potato chips may help calm your stomach enough to eat.
  • Avoid cooking or eating spicy, greasy or fried foods.
  • Open the windows or use the oven hood to get rid of the odours that bother you.
  • Get fresh air and avoid being too hot.
  • Take naps or take a few days off from work if necessary. Fatigue can make nausea worse.
  • If multivitamins increase your nausea, try taking them with food or just before bed. The Society of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists of Canada also recommends that pregnant women with nausea or vomiting stop taking prenatal multivitamins if they contain iron, as this may increase nausea. These multivitamins can be safely replaced with a folic acid supplement or low iron prenatal vitamins. This is because a pregnant woman's iron needs do not usually increase during the first trimester.
  • For some women, psychotherapy may be beneficial in reducing nausea, as it improves stress management and reduces anxiety.
I hope this is helpful to you,
Marie-Laurence Gauthier, pharmacist.
