What are the interactions between drugs and Nexplanon, the contraceptive implant?

20-year-old womana year ago
Hello, I have just been put on a Nexplanon contraceptive. My gynecologist told me that it was a very effective contraceptive but she also told me to be careful because some drugs could change its effectiveness but she did not tell me more. I would like to know what are the medications that can change its effectiveness and also if one day I have to take one of these medications how I should react? Is there anything I can do? I prefer to know everything so I don't have any bad surprises. I also forgot to ask the gynecologists if drinking alcohol in the evening or smoking sometimes can change its effectiveness?

Hello,
On the one hand, Nexplanon interacts with some prescription drugs, but very few non-prescription drugs or natural products. The main natural product to avoid is St. John's Wort. The important thing is that your local pharmacy knows that you have a Nexplanon implant. This way, when the pharmacist reviews your new prescriptions, he or she will be able to detect potential interactions with your contraceptive and discuss them with you. Also, if you are taking a new medication or natural product without a prescription, make it a habit to ask the pharmacist if it interacts with your Nexplanon.
On the other hand, Nexplanon is not affected by alcohol consumption or smoking.

If one day I have to take a medication that interacts with it, what should I do? Should I remove my implant or should I use another method in addition?

i also had another question. I did a pregnancy test but I had some bleeding at the same time, can the bleeding influence the negative result of the test? I did the test 3 weeks after my last risky intercourse and after my implant. Does the fact of doing a test at the same time as my period change the result?
There was no blood on the test.

If there is an interaction, it makes Nexplanon less effective. Therefore, it is left in place, but the person is advised and an additional contraceptive method is recommended. Note that drugs that interact with Nexplanon are not very common and are used to treat very specific problems (e.g. HIV, epilepsy).
For your second question, no, the presence of bleeding does not influence a pregnancy test.

Agreed, and in general, how long do we have to use a method in addition?
Sarah-Yan Chagnon · a year ago
The entire time you are taking the drug causing the interaction

only during the treatment or days before and after taking the treatment?
Sarah-Yan Chagnon · a year ago
It depends on the medication. Usually, it is during the entire treatment and the following days, while the effect of the medication on the body wears off.
