Good evening, in the short term, cortisone can cause insomnia, excess energy and heartburn. These are the most commonly reported side effects. By taking it in the morning with food, most people reduce these side effects. If you have other health problems, the control of these may be affected. For example, a diabetic may have higher than normal blood sugar levels. In the longer term, some people may experience weight gain. Cortisone can also affect bones. In your case, cortisone seems necessary. Stopping it abruptly could cause the "attack" of ulcerative colitis to start again. The goal of tapering is to keep the disease under control while trying to gradually wean off the cortisone. When weaning off the cortisone, you may feel less energetic, sleep more or have less appetite: this is the opposite of the short-term side effects. If you have any side effects or are concerned about something, I suggest you talk to your pharmacist or doctor.
In no case should cortisone be stopped for a person with ulcerative colitis without following the prescribed dosage or the advice of their pharmacist or physician. I hope this information will help you Alexandre Bergeron, pharmacist
