Are there any long-term effects of levetiracetam? Will I be able to stop it eventually?

68-year-old woman3 years ago
Hello. Two years ago, at the age of 63, I lost consciousness for the first time in my life. I had several medical tests and nothing definite was found. I do not have diabetes or cholesterol. A neurologist prescribed me Levetiracetam which I take as a 750 mg tablet twice a day. I have not lost consciousness since then.

Thank you for your question!
As you have probably noticed since starting this medication, follow-ups are required, for example on the effectiveness of the medication, your tolerance to taking it, and a blood test every 1 to 2 years depending on your health and other history
I want to reassure you that we have a lot of experience with this medication, which has proven its effectiveness and tolerance.
Cessation can be done, but it must be done with a closer follow-up: It will have to be stopped very gradually, preferably with a schedule of decrease
However, first and foremost, although nothing obliges you to take the drug if you are aware of the risk it may entail, it would be strongly recommended to obtain the approval of your neurologist before stopping it.
I hope this has been helpful to you and I am available if you have any further questions!
