Frankly, syrups do not really address the cause of the problem, which is most often sinus drainage from behind in the throat. To this end, the basis of treatment will be nasal hygiene with a saline solution (Hydrasense, Sinus Rinse and others), which can be done as often as necessary during the day, and at least 30 minutes before bedtime. By 'cleaning' the nasal secretions, one can decrease their backward flow, which often causes congestion, discharge, and coughing.
