What is the normal suggested dose for this situation and is the 5 mg folic acid available on shelves? Thanks in advance!

My partner and I are starting the process of having a baby. I went to my gynecologist to have my IUD removed recently. Since I have spina bifida occulta, he recommended 5 mg of folic acid instead of the normal recommended dose, but did not prescribe it.

Thank you for your question!
Your pharmacist will be able to prescribe it to you as well as your doctor :)
The usual dose is 0.4 to 1mg per day but it is higher if there are risk factors for neural tube defects. Your pharmacist will be able to review these with you.
