Can I give my 3 year old a cough syrup? If so which one?

Hello, my daughter is 3 years old and is suffering from laryngitis at the moment. She coughs a lot and I was wondering if we could give her a cough syrup to help her sleep a little bit, because as soon as she goes to bed, she coughs and it prevents her from sleeping. She received decadron yesterday at noon and 2 doses of ephedrine. We are already sitting her down to sleep with the window of her room open. Thanks

Hello ma'am, I'm sorry to read about her troubles!
Does she have any other symptoms like a runny or stuffy nose, even a little? Have you tried anything for these symptoms?

Yes, she has a bit of a runny nose. We do sinus rinses 3-4x a day. She has less and less nasal secretions. They are clear. It is mainly the cough that prevents her from sleeping ...

Thanks for the information, you did well with the nasal hygiene, I recommend it as often as needed during the day and at least 30 minutes before meals and bedtime, it is most effective. Syrups are unlikely to provide any benefit and I don't usually recommend them, especially since they have not been shown to be more effective than drinking liquids or a teaspoon of honey.
Sincerely,
Tom Samaha, pharmacist
