I do not recommend syrups because they have not been shown to be more effective than drinking lots of fluids. In fact, syrups do not address the source of the problem, which is most often discharge from the nose and sinuses that travels down the throat from behind.

The best treatment is nasal hygiene with a saline solution (Hydrasense, Sinus Rinse and others), which can be performed as often as needed during the day, and at least 30 minutes before bedtime, and followed by suctioning out the secretions with a nasal wand. By 'cleaning' the nasal secretions, we can reduce their backward flow, which often causes coughing. It's a little uncomfortable but works wonders!
