Constipation in a 5-month-old child?

30-year-old woman3 years ago
Hello My 5 month old baby is breastfed, but has been eating cereals since she was 4 months old and now purees for about 2 weeks. For almost a week now, she has been having trouble pooping (stiffens up and cries in pain when it comes time to do it, several times a day). She has done a few, but in small quantities and they are quite hard. Can I give her some laxaday? She weighs 14 pounds. Thank you

Hello, thank you for your question!
Yes, Lax-A-Day can be given to children, at a rate of 1 gram of powder per kg of baby's weight. Here, at 14 pounds, that would be 6 grams of Lax-A-Day powder in a small amount of any liquid, to be given 1 x/day. The line in the product cap says 17 grams, so it would be less than half that amount. If you need help measuring 6 grams, I suggest you go to your local pharmacy:
One trick I recommend is to weigh the powder in a clear vial (removing the weight from the vial) and write a line with a marker on the vial to indicate how much powder to use at home. This is done fairly quickly.
I hope I've helped you, and I'm available if you have any other questions!
