Will lowering the dose of Estrace cause fatigue?

52-year-old woman2 years ago
Hello, 1 week ago, my doctor decreased the dosage of Estrace from 1 mg to 0.5 mg because I had a feeling of swelling in my abdomen. At the same time, I increased the Zoloft from 50 mg to 75 mg. Since then, I have less energy and I am tired. I also have headaches. I am wondering if I should start taking Estrace 1 mg again because when I increased the dosage a few months ago, I saw an improvement in energy and mood. Is this a good idea?

Hello Ma'am,
It is difficult to establish an exact cause for this fatigue, especially since the dose of the 2 medications was changed at the same time. Indeed, the increase in dose of Zoloft could also be causing this fatigue.
The only way I would see Estrace as responsible is if your sleep has been disrupted (increased hot flashes from the decrease in Estrace dose?) since the Estrace dose change.
As you raise, it may be appropriate to make only one change at a time. To that end, I encourage you to consult your pharmacist/ne who can suggest options for you (Estrace dose, or Zoloft depending on your discussions), keep your doctor informed of the steps, and follow up closely with you :)
Cordially,
Tom Samaha, pharmacist
