My 4 1/2 year old son is going off his Keppra. How long will the side effects of withdrawal last? We reached the final prescribed dose on Thursday, March 21. I am talking about irritability, aggressiveness, insomnia.

The half-life of levetiracetam (Keppra) is 6 to 8 hours. After a change, the concentration of the drug in his blood will return to equilibrium in about 2 days after reaching the "final" dose. In children, equilibrium may be reached even more quickly.

That said, anticonvulsants are usually weaned very slowly to avoid the onset of these symptoms (over several months). How long did it take to wean your son off the medication? And why did we wean him off Keppra?

The neurologist made us lower the dose because he had become aggressive ++++

The neurologist prescribed a decrease of 1 ml per week over 4 weeks. He was taking 9 ml 2x a day and now 5 ml 2x a day

Thank you for these details.

If I understand correctly, your son had become aggressive possibly because of too much Keppra, and despite the decrease in dose, the aggressiveness remains. I think it would be necessary to see the neurologist again to see if the Keppra was really the cause (or the only cause). You should also know that the medication is already "balanced" in his blood and that the symptoms you describe should not be associated with withdrawal symptoms.
