How to reduce the pain of an ingrown toenail?

27-year-old woman2 years ago
Hello, I have an ingrown toenail on my big toe that is very painful. Having been diagnosed with my nail fungus, the nail is thickening on the sides which makes it impossible for me to cut. My family doctor has already prescribed me the antibiotic to take for the fungus, but since I am currently breastfeeding, she advised me to wait before taking the antibiotic. However, my nail is getting more and more painful and I am wondering what I should do to help the situation. Thank you for your help!

Hello Mrs,
Ibuprofen (Advil, Motrin and other brands) and/or acetaminophen (Tylenol) are the best treatments for pain. Just check if these are compatible with your other medications and/or health conditions, if any.
It is also advisable to soak the foot in warm water for 10 to 15 minutes to soften the skin and allow the nail to come out. However, if you are unable to cut it, or if the situation worsens (swelling, redness or presence of pus), it is recommended that you consult a podiatrist who can help you with this situation.
I hope this was helpful to you and if you have any further questions, please do not hesitate to contact me
