Hello,
For the treatment of migraines in children, there is usually a response to over-the-counter oral analgesics such as Tylenol or Advil. However, for refractory cases, a triptan may be necessary. In the United States, rizatriptan is approved for use in children 6 years of age and older. Compared to other triptans, it is one of the most studied and has better quality data. In terms of side effects, the main ones include drowsiness, dizziness, paresthesia, and a feeling of heat. They can be common but are generally mild.
Rizatriptan is a good treatment option among others, considering the failure of Advil. The 5 mg dose is the lowest possible dose, so side effects should not be significant. However, I still suggest that you monitor his condition after he takes his first dose. If he finds the side effects too uncomfortable, it doesn't mean he will have the same reaction to another triptan. In this case, notify his or her doctor to discuss the risks and benefits of continuing with the same treatment or trying another.
