What can I do about pain when I swallow?

19-year-old womana year ago
Hello, since yesterday, I have great pain when I swallow, so I avoid water and food. I eventually feel pain in my throat when I don't swallow but it is much less painful. I am either very cold or very hot and my nose is running. The cough and cold medicine calms the pain slightly when I swallow, but not very much.

Hello ma'am,
The first line of defence would be Tylenol for throat pain and fever, with lozenges like Halls or Fisherman's Friend for local relief.
Advil can also provide relief if you have no contraindications to taking it, which you should confirm with your pharmacist. I must also suggest that you discontinue any cold products you are taking as they may contain either Tylenol or Advil
If possible, I encourage you to drink plenty of fluids, cold or hot, depending on your preference.
If your symptoms persist for more than a week without improvement or get worse, you should see a doctor.
I remain available if you have any further questions!
Sincerely,
Tom Samaha, pharmacist
