What to do about my congested baby?

32-year-old woman2 years ago
Hello, since 24 hours my 20 month old baby has difficulty breathing and is congested. She sleeps a lot and hardly eats. She has drunk about 5 oz of milk since yesterday .... Should I consult or wait a little longer?

Good morning, ma'am,
Decreased appetite is common during an episode of illness. As long as your child is drinking (and eating), even if less than usual, and she is soiling and wetting her diaper, there is no need to worry.
I strongly suggest nasal hygiene with saline solution and a baby wipe. It's a little uncomfortable but works great and can be done as often as needed during the day and at least 30 minutes before bedtime.
At night, I suggest applying Vicks type ointment to the chest or back (not the face). This can help with congestion. Just make sure (with the pharmacist if necessary) that the product is suitable for babies 20 months old.
If symptoms persist for more than a week without improvement, or your child develops a fever for 3 days, you should see a doctor.
In the meantime, I will remain available if you have any further questions
