Is Valtrex contraindicated in pregnancy?

28-year-old woman3 years ago
Hello, for about 8 months I have been taking valtrex daily. My doctor had prescribed this treatment for my cold sores which were very painful, voluminous and frequent. Prescription: 2 tablets a day for 6 months and then 1 tablet a day for another 6 months. However, I am not able to stop the medication nor to decrease it because as soon as I do, the cold sores start again. With 2 tablets a day, I don't have any cold sores at all. I am trying to get pregnant, I want to know the risks, contraindications, effects that taking valtrex can have on the fetus, etc.

Hello,
Thank you for your question!
Valtrex is generally compatible with pregnancy. I wouldn't worry about continuing the treatment while you are trying to get pregnant; the treatment can most likely be continued during pregnancy as well, since current studies do not suggest an increased risk of malformation or abnormality with Valtrex
I hope that I have answered your question and I am available for more information if needed!
