Can I get the COVID vaccine if I am taking prednisone?

33-year-old woman3 years ago
I am on prednisone for a pregnancy related rash (I gave birth on June 19). Can I still get my second dose of Covid vaccine or do I have to wait? I am on 40 mg right now. Thank you

Hello, thank you for your question!
According to the Quebec Immunization Committee, prednisone has a greater effect on the immune system if you take more than 20mg (which is the case for you), for 2 weeks or more.
In this case, receiving the COVID-19 vaccine is not contraindicated, but chances are that the immune response to the vaccine will not be as great (and therefore effective) as if you are not taking prednisone.
You have two choices:
  • You still get your 2nd dose as scheduled, and it will still be effective, at some point
  • You wait to finish your treatment with prednisone
In both cases, I strongly suggest that you talk to your doctor. I am still missing some important information to give you a clear answer, but basically these are the 2 choices that will have to be discussed with your doctor.
I hope to have answered your questions, and I am available if you have any other questions!
