In fact, after taking 21 consecutive days of pink pills containing hormones, it is considered safe and effective to take a "hormone-free break" of 7 days or less (which corresponds to the 7 white pills without hormones), because the 21 days of hormones prevent ovulation
This effectiveness is therefore preserved if you take a "hormone-free break" of 7 days or less and start a new pack with the hormone-containing pills. However, if the hormone-free period exceeds 7 days (e.g., forgetting to start a new pack, losing pills, etc.), natural ovulation mechanisms may kick in and a decrease in the effectiveness of the birth control pill may be noted. π
