I have a cold and I am breastfeeding, what can I do?

Hi, I am exclusively breastfeeding my 4 month old daughter and I am starting a cold! What can I take as a decongestant and as a lozenge? I don't want it to decrease my milk production or affect my daughter! Thank you

Hello Mrs., thank you for your question!
Decongestants can decrease milk production, so they should be avoided while breastfeeding.
For throat irritation, acetaminophen (Tylenol and other brands) is the best treatment, as well as lozenges like Fisherman's Friend for local relief.
For coughs, mucus discharge, and nasal congestion, I would opt for nasal hygiene with a saline solution (Hydrasense, Sinus Rinse and others), which can be done as often as needed during the day, and at least 30 minutes before bedtime. By 'cleaning' the nasal secretions, you can reduce the backward flow of secretions, which often causes coughing.
I also encourage you to drink plenty of fluids, cold or hot, as you prefer.
I hope I've been helpful, and please don't hesitate if you have any further questions!

Hello again,
How much do syrups decrease milk production? Are they dangerous for baby?
I've had a cold for about a week now and I'm getting really tired of it
Will this not lower my production permanently or only for a moment?
Thank you very much for your help

Syrups containing a decongestant may have this effect. It is difficult to predict the extent of this decrease, as well as the period of time, but this decrease may even appear after a single dose in some people. This is why, in addition to their questionable effectiveness, it is not recommended to take syrups. Their effectiveness has not been proven to be superior to ......drinking a lot of liquids.
A cold can last 7 to 10 days, but you should notice a small, albeit gradual, improvement.
Also, I encourage you to check out the following link, which is a self-assessment to consider whether or not you should be screened for COVID.

I only have a runny nose and some congestion but in the long run it is very tiring for me as I am used to taking medication when it usually happens hihi!
Thank you very much once again
Is there a limit of consecutive days that I can't take tylenol for my 4 month old baby? I respect all doses and do not exceed the allowed doses in 24H

Thanks for the feedback!
As for Tylenol for your child, if you respect the dosage, including the maximum per 24-hour period, there should be no problem
However, if the fever persists for 72 hours or more, you should consult a doctor.
